On the first day of July 1921 the University of Dhaka opened its doors to students. The University was set up in a picturesque part of the city known as Ramna on 600 acres of land. Before the university was declared formally open. Vice Chancellor Sir P.J. Hartog, and some newly appointed teachers, put in their best efforts so that the institution could begin on the right note.

The BUET campus is in the heart of the city of Dhaka. It has a compact campus with halls of residence within walking distances of the academic buildings. Jahangirnagar University

Jahangirnagar University was launched at a time when the country was going through the throes of a great political upheaval that led to the birth of our nation - Bangladesh. It was caught in the middle of two crucial events in our history -- the mass movement of the late sixties, and the post-independence effort at consolidation involving a great deal of sacrifice, austerity and hard work.

The university was established in 1970 by the Jahangirnagar Muslim University Ordinance, 1970 (later amended as Jahangirnagar University Act, 1973), During the two preceding years, it operated as a project, Its first Vice-Chancellor took up office on September 24, 1970. The first batch of students, a total of 150, was enrolled in four departments; Economics, Geography, Mathematics and Statistics. Its formal inauguration was delayed until January 12, 1971, when the university was formally launched by Vice-admiral S. M. Ahsan, the then Chancellor

Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University

Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University is a government financed public university of Bangladesh. It is located at Nama para Battala, 1.5 kilometers from Trishal Upazila, some 22 kilometers from Mymensingh district and 100 kilometers from Dhaka.

A project to establish the university was taken at a meeting of the Executive Committee of National Economic Commission (ECNEC) in February 2004. Former prime minister, Begum Khaleda Zia, laid the foundation stone of the university on March 1, 2005. At a function organised for the birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia inaugurated the functions of the two faculties On 25 May 2007 .Its first batch class was started on 3 June 2007. Professor Dr. Mohammad Shamsur Rahman was the first vice-Chancellor of JKKNIU. The first batch consisted of 185 students in Bangla language and Literature department and English language and Literature department under arts faculty and Computer Science and Engineering department under science faculty. [2] On 23 June 2009, a bill was placed in the parliament to assign the president as chancellor replacing the prime minister[3]

Rajshahi University

University of Rajshahi is the second largest University in the country and the highest seat of learning in the northern region of Bangladesh. The University has crossed 55 years of its foundation opening its door for the students with a solemn promise to spread quality of higher education and research on July 6, 1953. Situated at the green premises of Motihar, the main campus of the university is very close to the mighty river Padma and three miles east of Rajshahi City.

Rangpur University


The people of greater Rangpur (Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts) have been demanding a University in Rangpur since 1950s. Finally, the caretaker government of Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmad, in a historic cabinet meeting held in Rangpur on February 2, 2008, took the decision to establish a University in Rangpur. The Rangpur University Ordinance was approved by the cabinet on June 15, 2008.[4]

International Islamic University

International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC) is one of the Government approved Private Universities in Bangladesh. The credit for the idea of establishing this University goes to Islamic University Chittagong Trust (IUCT), which is the founder organization of the University. The Trust is a non-political and non-profit voluntary organization, registered with the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh under the Societies Act XXI of 1860. Under the aegis of IUCT and the grace of Allah (Swt), Islamic University Chittagong got the Government Approval on February 11, 1995 and the University was founded in the same year accordingly.

In 2004 IIUC was recognized as one of the 9 Top-graded (out of 52) Private Universities by Government-appointed High Powered Team led by the UGC Chairman. At present it is the largest private University with 287 (213 Full Time) teachers and around 7500 students from home and abroad. The total space used for academic and administrative purposes is around 4,59,990 sft. A good number of full time teachers are studying abroad for higher degrees with IIUC scholarship.

Jagannath University

The college started with only 48 students and in five years, the roll raised to 396. In 1910, Raja Manmath Roy Chowdhury, the zamindar of Santosh, tangail affiliated the Pramath-Manmath College of Tangail with Jagannath College.It was known as the best equipped private college in Dhaka as early as 1910. With the establishment of Dhaka University in 1921 the college had to stop admission in Degree courses and was renamed Jagannath Intermediate College. This status was changed after 28 years in 1949, when it reopened Degree classes. The college was taken over by the government in 1968.

Jagannath College opened honours and masters programmes in 1975. That year the government once again took over the college and upgraded it into a postgraduate college. In 1982, the college closed its programmes of intermediate level.The college introduced evening shifts in 1992.The college was transformed into the Jagannath University in 2005. At present the University has 22 departments under 4 faculties. The faculties are Science, Arts, Business Studies and Social Science. Now 271 teachers are engaged in providing quality education of around 27000 students. on diverse areas.

National University

The National University was established in 1992 under an act of Parliament of the Government of the people's republic of Bangladesh with features distinct from those of the traditional Universities of the country. The National University caters the general education at graduate and post-graduate level in colleges/institutions which were affiliated to different public universities since independence. About one million students are studying in more than 1600 colleges/institutions affiliated to this university. Pabna University of Science & Technology

Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST) is one of the most recent Science and Technology University for higher studies in the country. About 200 students are being admitted Undergraduate Programs in Engineering and Technology, Science and Business Studies in this institution. At present, PUST has four Departments under three faculties. The PUST campus is in the heart of Pabna(Rajapur) - the old city of Bangladesh. Now it has a temporary campus at Teacher's Training College, Rajapur, Pabna.

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology

SUST introduced the integrated honours course for the first time in Bangladesh. It introduced the semester system from the 1995-96 session and there was a remarkable improvement in the quality of education after the introduction of this system, which was visible even in the national arena. Every student from SUST has to take two language courses, one in Bangla and the other one in English. Every student also has to take two computer courses, one for computer literacy and the other to learn a computer language. The computer center of SUST offers courses to every employees and one can say, without any hesitation that SUST is the most IT enabled university in this country.

SUST has started it’s graduate programmes by offering masters degree to graduating bachelors of most of the departments. It is difficult to start a world-class research programme without a well funded graduate school, even then the teachers of SUST are trying to create a research environment in the campus. Two research journals are published regularly from SUST, one in Bangla and the other one in English where a few hundred research papers are submitted every year. Several departments have hosted International Conferences and are planning to organize similar events in the near future.


Sher-E-Bangla Agricultural University

Sher-E-Bangla Agricultural University

SAU's history can be traced back to 1938. The term ‘Sher-e-Bangla' comes from its founder the then chief Minister of undivided Bengal Sher-e-Bangla A K Fazlul Huq, who laid down the foundation stone of this historic institution, then known as ‘Bengal Agricultural Institute'. With a history of transformations, SAU has become the 17th public university of the country in 2001. Over nearly a hundred years, SAU has grown into a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive university with agriculture and Agribusiness in the center point. Since inception, the institution has made outstanding contributions to our nation, especially to agricultural production and food security. From 1938 hitherto, our university has a total number of more than 7000 graduates, more than 1000 Master's degree. Graduates can be found everywhere in the country and abroad and contributing tremendously to feed the universe. It is now adopting Animal & veterinary science and Fisheries faculties with distinctive features.

At SAU, undergraduate and graduate programs are developing concurrently, with teaching and research as the two central tasks. There are 2 Bachelor's programs provided for undergraduate. Besides, the university offers Master's programs and Doctoral programs. At present there are more than 390 faculty and staff at SAU, including 30 full professors and 34 associate professors. The campus houses modern teaching spaces, excellent library and other campus facilities including accommodation for approximately 2000 undergraduate and more than 500 graduate students.

University of Chittagong



The University of Chittagong became the third public university to be set up by the government of Pakistan, and it was officially inaugurated by the then governor of East Pakistan, Mr. Md. Abdul Monem Khan on 18 November 1966. But earlier in 1964 the site for the university had already been selected and a foundation stone was laid by Field Marshal Mohammad Ayub Khan, the then President of Pakistan, at the top of a small hill in the northern part of the campus. It is located at Fatehpur, 22 km. away from the Chittagong city and about one kilometer away to the west from Chittagong-Nazirhat highway. In the beginning there were only four departments to speak of: Bangla, English, History and Economics respectively.

In these four departments, about 200 students were admitted. Professor Azizur Rahman Mallick joined Chittagong University in 1965 as the Project Director. The Chittagong University Ordinance was promulgated on 25 September 1966. Professor A. R. Mallick was appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor on 9 October 1966. At present, thirty five departments, three institutes and five research centres are operating in this University.
